While some bands celebrate the unique flavor each member brings to the table, Portland, Oregon band Archeology derives their distinct sound from their similarities rather than their differences. Writing partners Jason Davis and Daniel Walker, along with drummer Benjamin Haysom, all grew up in a small Central Washington logging town of 700 people where lack of radio and television reception narrowed their musical exposure to their parents' country western record collections and the significantly belated Top 40 hits played at school dances. With little to do besides enjoy the outdoors, songs from those records became the standard for campfire sing alongs and artists such as Hank Williams, Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson played a vital role in shaping the band's musical direction. In winter of 2006, Walker, Davis and Haysom formed their first band together which, after a move to Portland in 2008 and a slight shift in musical direction, morphed into the current manifestation of Archeology . The band got off to a frenzied start, releasing 5 EPs in 2009! Their first full length, Memorial, was released the following spring of 2010. The band added lead guitarist Zachary Dilday, crisscrossed the country on several tours and received nods from Filter and Vogue magazines. While on a break from tour, the band spent four days camping in northern Arizona and inspiration struck amongst ancient Anasazi ruins. The band worked through several songs that would become the template for their sophomore release. With topics ranging from family skeletons to unrequited love, the album maintains the band's country/folk roots but with a heavier, darker feel that both captures the band's earnest effort towards introspection as well as the stark, lonely feel of that canyon in Arizona. This summer the band is embarking on their fourth national tour, will be releasing their 7" vinyl single Hunger and putting the final cymbal crashes, vocal harmonies and guitar solos on their sophomore album.
