Contrary to long-standing rumours of being a Slough-based band, The Attendants did in fact hail from Ruislip. They formed just for a bit of fun in 1979 to write and play a few songs but following an unexpected first gig in Uxbridge, they were being asked to support other local bands and soon found themselves playing prestigious venues such as Dingwalls and the Rock Garden. The Attendants then headed to Slough where there was a thriving music scene and were regularly playing pubs and clubs with bands such as Arrogant, White Lines and Robert & The Remoulds. In the autumn of 1980, the Attendants released a double-A side single featuring the songs 'Happy Families' and 'Deadbeats & No-Ones'. The single even got Radio 1 airplay on John Peel's late night show! Thirty years later, this piece of vinyl is something of a collectors item - especially the ones with picture sleeves! A proposed gig supporting The Ruts in February of that year was scuppered when the Hanborough Tavern caught fire just days before the gig. On a brighter note, the band did get to support Tenpole Tudor later that year. Another of the bands songs - 'Veranda Serenade' - also found its way onto vinyl when it appeared on the Uxbridge-based 'Tyger Annual' album in 1982. After writing 25 songs and playing more than 100 gigs, the Attendants eventually called it a day in December 1982. However, in February 2007 the band got together for a birthday re-union bash in Northwood, which was so succesful that they have continued to play the occasional gig. For their forthcoming appearance at Tropics, the band will be releasing 'Risk Assessment' - a CD comprising 15 of their original songs from early favourites such as 'Cheese & Wine Parties' and 'Sunday Drivers' to the recently-composed 'The Same Old'.
