I've had a long history with board and card games; my father was an ASL junkie and Avalon Hill fanboy since before I was born, and while he never did get me to pick up Advanced Squad Leader, I was playing Up Front and Civilization far earlier than the suggested age on the box. Throughout my teenage years and into college, I was dimly aware of the wider board gaming hobby, but missed out on the start of the euro craze in the late nineties, spending my time instead with Warhammer 40k and much, much lighter fare like Munchkin. In college I was introduced to games like Princes of Florence, Power Grid, and eventually Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition. I had a long stretch as an active gamer was from 2003 (my first Gen Con) through 2008 (my last Gen Con). After that, I left for graduate school and a series of moves around the country and outside of it, before finally settling the Pittsburgh area. Now, through the joys of Meetup and other sources, I'm slowly rejoining the gaming community and beginning to plan for future events. Due to my work schedule and other life events, going to full-fledged gaming conventions has not been a regular thing for me (even before COVID), but I still try to participate in local gaming events at least monthly. In part because I'd love to play any game in my collection, and thus all of them could be considered a 9 or 10 by BGG's stated ranking system, I instead rate games by my evaluation of their overall quality. I don't think I'll ever ask to play Power Grid again, but I know it's a great design on its own merits. Even with that caveat, my ratings tend to be on the high side since I tend to only play games that I already have good reason to think I will like; I don't have the time or--absent regular trips to Gen Con--the ability to just try any random thing that comes out. At least, until something better comes along. My "Hot Ten" will eventually be an extension of my regular Top Ten, but for now is a shameful reminder of the games in my collection I have yet to get to the table, in roughly the order I acquired them. (One day, Tragedy Looper, one day.) This list does not include games on my trade list I have yet to play, since I'm trying to trade those games rather than play them. Borderline are based in South East London and produce short films. We have been in existence for four years and in this time have had some success in national and international film festivals. Closer to home we have films in the London Portobello and Supershorts festivals and screenings on Sky TV. Borderline are Bob Vine and Graeme Webb and we are passionate about our film making, Bob works for an international organisation in graphic design and Graeme is a media consultant, we use high end DV and HDV cameras and Apple post-production kit.
