In search of my weebish second wind. 450th Anime: Million Lives Season 2 400th Anime: Oshiete! Galko-chan 350th Anime: Texhnolyze 300th Anime: ef: A Tale of Memories. 250th Anime- Gunslinger Girl My current (2023) stance on ratings is that they're a brain rot for consuming and analyzing media through a critical lens, but my brain has long since rotted, and I can't go back now. 11- The Best Anime Ever (Madoka). 10- My personal favorites. Inspired feelings strong enough to permeate my thoughts long after watching, which I frequently go back to. At this point in my weebdom, it's becoming exceedingly more rare to get a new one of these, especially by way of seasonal viewing. 9- Things here and up are what I consider to be "great anime". Practically the same level of quality as a 10, albeit without that pervasive characteristic. 8- A very good anime. It has noticeable flaws, but if you're me, you can ignore them in the moment and then write something pretentious sounding about them afterwards. 7- A mostly good anime. It's enjoyable and has its memorable moments, but is pulled down by concrete and distracting flaws. 6- "Watchable" anime. Either a seasonal that wasn't too hard to justify 20 minutes a week for, or something that started off well and then fizzled out into mediocrity. The middle point of a 10 point scale is at 5.5, which doesn't exist on a 10 point scale, so a 6 is the good kind of mediocre. 5- And a 5 is the bad kind of mediocre. These are marked by their consistent inconsistency, or by the complete lack of enthusiasm that they inspire in me as a viewer, because they refuse to make any attempts at being interesting. 4- A typical, boilerplate bad anime. There isn't really a "one size fits all" in terms of what makes an anime bad, but in the interest of being able to avoid the temporal and emotional investment of having a well thought out, rigorous opinion on a show that doesn't deserve it, given that I can't even do that most of the time for the shows that do, that's mostly what this category is for. 3- This anime is probably annoying and a chore to watch. If I haven't dropped, it's because I was interested in seeing if it could get any worse, but wound up disappointed. In any case, it's really bad, but not impressively so. This is the worst rating a bad anime can get before its badness becomes an event. 2- The paragon of bad anime, so bad it's impressive, usually to the point of being entertaining for that aspect alone. These are my favorite bad anime. This is as low as the scale goes before any objective observations are thrown out. 1- The worst of the worst. Not only is a show like this devoid of entertainment value, but it reaches into the negatives, making watching it mentally, and sometimes physically, painful. I don't usually score drops, but most would be 1's or 3's if I forced myself to watch them. I also rate the manga I read on more or less the same scale. The main difference is that being comparatively more easy to binge means that I can tolerate a bad manga much easier. And also, bad directing is usually the thing that annoys me the most in anime, but that doesn't exist when reading manga, because I am the director.
