I was introduced to boardgames around 2006-2007 when I found out about a boardgame club that met at Caltech, where I was going for my undergraduate degree. I remember being amazed by Carcassonne: all those cute little pieces coming together to make a map at the end of the game. I've come a long way since then. I really started playing boardgames seriously when Game Empire opened in Pasadena. Game Empire is an amazing store that has boardgame meetings twice a week, so I was able to get a lot of games in over the years I lived in Pasadena. I also rapidly acquired a sizable collection of games around this time. As time passed, I became disenchanted with the majority of the games that we would play at the Game Empire meetups. I discovered that I found many Euros, especially economic Euros, to be excruciatingly boring. I also didn't like most of the Ameritrash games that seemed to be popular at the time. That's, not to say that there are no Euros or Ameritrash that I like -- I still have a number of favorites. Nonetheless it got to the point where I often felt isolated from the rest of my friends who seemed to always want to play games that were mind-crushingly boring. What I really want to play nowadays is wargames. Unlike Euro snoozefests like Agricola and Power Grid, wargames are always deliciously tense and exciting. I also enjoy this historical aspect of wargames, which has fed into and amplified my prior interest in history. Unfortunately, it can be be hard to get wargames to the table, even among self-professed wargamers! One reason is that most wargames are two-player, which can be a hard sell when everyone wants to get the entire group in a single game for some reason:shake:. On the other hand, multiplayer wargames are difficult because it's hard to get multiple different player's to all learn the rules. Nonetheless, I am persevering, and play wargames every chance I get.
