I have been a math teacher for 8 years in the middle grades. One thing I have learned over my career as an educator is that parental involvement is close to non existent in many areas. I have always been associated with math and kids growing up. Never to think that I would put the two together and begin educating students in math. At first it seemed like a cool gig. I would get paid to teach kids my favorite subject. Shortly after my first year I realized teaching kids is a lot bigger than just showing up with lesson plans and delivering a lesson on algebraic expressions. Students need structure, guidance, role models, answers, clarification. I quickly realized that the ratio of students from two parent homes to single parent homes was 1 to 8. If you paid attention to how the majority of those students coming from single parent homes conducted themselves it would raise an eyebrow. I was confused as to why certain students would act out in class, and how their parents would never show up to parent conferences or any school events. The issue I had with this was that the cycle will not be broken unless someone intervenes. I have never been given a second chance, or had anyone support me; however I want students to have a second chance at education and learn the crucial skills to be successful in life.
