I won't tell you that I have been a good boy, you probably know that better than I. The reason I am writing to you again this year is my passion for board games. For quite a time now, almost 6 years, I have been playing board games massively. As you know, I always loved to play board games like [b]Catan[/b] or [b]Hotel Tycoon[/b] as a kid and extensively tried to win in [b]Chess[/b] against my grandfather until I actually did and he didn't want to play against me anymore. 2016 I somehow started playing board games again and in 2017 I got into this mess called [b]Kickstarter[/b]. Since then I have acquired quite a lot of games but I am still missing so many great games. If I actually made it on your good list this year, maybe you could help me out in getting something I should really have in my collection. Thanks Santa and Happy Christmas. _________________________________________________________________________ I own quite some board games I acquired over the past couple of years by Kickstarter and via retail. The idea of helping people realizing their dream of creating their own board game really got me into Kickstarter and I can't quit spending my money on those great projects I encounter almost every day. Every week I try to dedicate at least one day to playing board games and most of the time my friends and I actually do. Also, I'm active at different board gaming groups in my town and nearby. It is fun how different those groups actually are. With my friends I play heavy games like [b]Eclipse[/b], [b]Terraforming Mars[/b] or [b]Trickerion[/b] while the games in the gaming groups are easier ones that can be played in well under two hours. Also once a month we meet up in our local pub and play everything that fits on the table (well, we did before corona). Every now and then I get together with some great people who are way longer into the hobby than I am and own 1000+ or even 2000+ board games. Every time we meet they introduce me to great games I quite likely never heard of and they enjoy the Kickstarter Games I bring that they don't know yet. I also got a group of very close friends that aren't much into board games but they love to play story games like [b]TIME Stories[/b]. We even started our first D&D session some time ago. But some of those friends don't speak English very well so I can't introduce them to most of those great English language games I got via Kickstarter like [b]Gloomhaven[/b] and others. For that reason I favor [b]German over English[/b] in games with heavy text if available. My personal preferences definitely lie with heavy board games. For example games like [b]Food Chain Magnate[/b]. My Top 10 and Hot 10 lists probably give a better overview of my likes than I could but let me just say, I really enjoy historical themed games and everything with Wild West, Colonization or Pirate themes. I'm not a fan of Zombie Games, I own [b]Zombicide: Green Plague[/b] but the gameplay and theme don't really speak to me. Also trick taking games like [b]Wizard[/b] are an absolute horror for me unless the trick taking mechanism is hidden behind some well done theme like [b]Peppers of the Caribbean[/b] managed or [b]The Crew[/b] and play quick. [b]Scythe[/b] also never hit my nerve but I'm actually willing to play this one because one person in my weekly gaming group owns everything there is [b]Scythe[/b] related and you got to keep everyone happy in the group. Other than that I also enjoy a family night with [b]Dixit[/b] and the fabulous [b]Menara[/b]. Games like [b]Arkham Horror: The Card Game[/b] or [b]Adventure Games: The Dungeon[/b], where you really get an immersive experience are also games I quite enjoy but need to be in German language because I mostly play them with people that aren't fluent in English. Some of my games I only bought because of their artwork like [b]Savage Planet: The Fate of Fantos[/b] or [b]Village of Legends[/b]. If a game has unique and great artwork it's definitely a plus. Lately I grew pretty fond of the art in [b]VITA MORS[/b] and in [b]7 Souls[/b]. To give another idea of my preferences I list some of my acquisitions at Essen Spiel 2019 like [b]Moon Base[/b] (abstract 2-player-game), [b]Sprawlopolis[/b] (small city builder), [b]Pangea[/b] (great theme) and [b]Lux Aeterna[/b] (solitaire scifi game). Essen Spiel 2021 was a different cup of tea. The convention was very eruopean heavy and I personally like to get a look at games from different continents. So I only aquired some smaller games because [b]Brazil: Imperial[/b] wasn't available, [b]Arche Nova[/b] was sold out before I got to playtest it and I already preordered [b]Golem[/b] online. Hopefully 2024 will be great again.
