My enjoyment of a game usually depends on the fun had vs time spent and how involved I am on every round of the game including opponent's turns (i.e. down time). This means that for a very long game, I am less likely to forgive certain flaws, while in shorter games I am more likely to forgive some flaws. [b]Rating system:[/b] I have come up with this little formula that helps me explain to others the rating for most of my games. and it reflects my dislikes and likes about games like I explained above. This system may be updated in the future. [i]Rating= ([(Good things)- (Bad Things)]+10)/2[/i] Items on each category have different weights that represent how much I care about that particular category. The final score is a 0 to 10, very closely reflecting BGG rating system. [b]Good Things:[/b] Theme (Weight 0.1) Components (Weight 0.1) Depth (Weight 0.3) Overall Fun (Weight 0.2) Satisfaction (Weight 0.3) [b]Bad Things:[/b] Down time (Weight 0.9) Complexity of teaching (Weight 0.1) [b]Theme:[/b] This category rates how much I like the theme and whether the theme comes through the game. a game rated 0 in this category means that has no theme whatsoever and it is simply pasted on and that the gameplay doesn't have to do anything with this pasted on theme. A game rated a 10 in this category means that that I really enjoy the theme and it is fully captured in the game play. [b]Components:[/b] Are the components nice and of good quality? How good is the art work? 0 means the game is simply text on a paper, cubes and circles. There is nothing nice to look at and it might break if I sneeze. 10 means the game components are gorgeous, there are details everywhere without making the board or the cards busy. The components are robust and feel nice to the touch. These are pieces of artwork, I wouldn't mind hanging up some of these things on my wall as decoration. [b]Depth:[/b] Does the game provided multiple meaningful choices or are turns spelled out for the player? Does the game have multiple paths to Victory or there is simply one strategy. A game rated a 0 has no decisions whatsoever, like snakes and ladders. a game rated a 10 provides meaningful decisions every turn and figuring out which one is the best turn per turn is difficult to figure out. The game also provides multiple strategies to victory. [b]Overall Fun:[/b] At the end of the game, did I enjoy it or did I want the game to finish as soon as possible so we could do something else. This could be either the social experience or how fun was it to play each round. A game that is rated a 0 provided no fun whatsoever and I wanted to quit right away, I might as well watch paint dry. a game rated a 10 means that whether because of the mechanics of the game, the theme or the social aspect of it was tremendous fun. It either stimulated my brain, made me laugh a lot throughout the game, made me feel connected to my peers or provided stories to talk about during and after the game. [b]Satisfaction:[/b] At the end of the game, do I feel the game promised what it was set to do, did it feel like it ended too soon? did it drag? Did it fulfill my craving? a game rated a 0 didn't satisfy my gaming needs at all, it didn't feel like a game at all but more like a social activity. A game rated a 10 fulfilled my gaming need. If this was the only game I played for today I would be happy. (off course i want to play as much as possible though :p). [b]Down time:[/b] How long do i have to wait for my turn? Am I involved on other players turns? A game rated a 10 has a intensive amount of downtime, I might as well bring a book and read when is not my turn because I will be waiting a lot. A game rated a 0 means that I am either playing at the same time as everybody else or the downtime is so short is barely noticeable. It could also mean that I am involved on everyone else actions and hence I don't get bored. [b]Complexity of teaching:[/b] How difficult is this game to teach? Is there a way I can make all the phases of the game flow nicely in the explanation? are there a lot of exceptions? Is there a lot to remember? Is the game intuitive? A game rated a 10 means that the game is so fiddly, counter intuitive, complex and or full exceptions that teaching the game is not easy at all. A game rated a 0 means that the explanation flows nicely, it is intuitive, and the complexity of the game doesn't come from the mechanics but the choices you make. Also, the exceptions are minimal or are not needed at the beginning of the game and can be brought up as you play.
