[b]Curriculum Ludens[/b] I've been playing games for about as long as I can remember. While most of the early games were classics like [thing=2136]Mensch ärgere Dich nicht[/thing] and [thing=2322][/thing], or card games like [thing=15878]Rommé[/thing] and [thing=17104][/thing] which I used to play a lot with my grandpa, one of the games I have very fond memories of is Das [thing=4586][/thing]. Anyway, boardgaming took a bit of a lull when I discovered computers where my favourites were often turn-based strategy games which are still pretty close to the boardgame experience in many respects. Eventually, I even wrote two games myself: Task Force, a tactical squad-based game for the Commodore Amiga, and [url=http://crimson.seul.org]Crimson Fields[/url], a tribute to the great Battle Isle that supports a variety of operating systems. Then came a stint of several years of playing RPGs, mostly [family=2329][/family] and [family=311][/family]. I think what mostly keeps me from playing those today is the time commitment they require. Setting up RPG campaigns is just so much more work than setting up a board. Boardgaming took off again when I picked up [thing=699][/thing] at a fleamarket one day. That quickly led to [thing=1568][/thing] and spending weeks designing custom missions and a full-blown campaign including both of the expansions. Then, along came [thing=463][/thing], and it did not tolerate anything else beside it. Everyone was playing it, all the time. We had a lot of fun and sank a lot of money. The craze really only ended when I eventually left town for university. I was still able to convert a few select people there but overall it cooled off considerably, and the computer made a stronger showing again. There were occasional board game meetings as well, but on the whole, boardgaming took a backseat while I was studying. After graduation I moved again, and boardgaming picked up a little, too. Still, I found myself in the same situation a lot of people on the site are familiar with: I wanted to game more but couldn't find people to play with (or at least not as often as I would have liked). A few years went by, and in 2006 I moved to Frankfurt. A couple of months later I discovered a semi-regular gaming group that met on Saturdays. Games played varied from gateways to heavies, as did the players. Still a few months later I came across another game group that met (and still meets) weekly but didn't really go beyond the gateways. While it's still a rather casual group I do believe I made an impact. And finally, in March 2009 I found that there was a [guild=414]Frankfurt guild[/guild] on BoardGameGeek. While I had known the site for quite a while I had never really looked at it in depth but this was the catalyst that made me sign up. There is a weekly guild meeting, and since there are all sorts of players you can play all sorts of games. I suppose I'm a member of the heavy euro faction there. The only downside to the guild (although it might also be up depending on how you look at it) is that people have seemingly unlimited supplies of unplayed games on their shelves so that we rarely get to play a single game more than once or twice in a year. So while there certainly is a bit more room for games (speaking temporally; spatially, my collection is about as big as it can be right now) the situation has improved to a point I am pretty happy with. Game on! [b]Gaming Preferences[/b] I play lots of different games, but my favourites tend to be of the deeper Euro variety, often with an economic backdrop. They don't get played as often as I'd like, though, because many of my gaming buddies prefer somewhat lighter fare. I generally dislike games with a high luck factor unless they are reasonably short and sufficiently non-serious games. There are a few games I will actively lobby against and I avoid playing as much as possible but I'm usually willing to play even games that do not rank highly on my list every once in a while.
