We discovered Memoir '44 and Betrayal at House on the Hill, and OMG all the wonderful games out there, and played for a few years. I also played with my niece, who's a little bit older than my son, and my nephew who was only a baby when we started. Since then my son has grown up and is now way too cool to play board games with his dad, though he has played hundreds of them now. He'll play games that are cool with his crowd, like Mao or some party games, and Betrayal is still OK by him. I reckon when he goes to university he'll be one of those guys who plays 500 in the common room, or obscure RPGs... I think the gaming habit is embedded in him now. And when people describe a game to him he'll get it straight away as he's so experienced at learning rules. So enough about him, this is about me. The peak of my board game obsession was in 2006 when I had a lot of spare time because my wife left me - in fact I had a whole lot more money as a consequence! I played over 200 new games that year, some of which because I was trying to play everything in the top 50. As a consequence I figured out what sort of games I liked and started to move away from Ameritrash and negotiation games and long games, and favour light to medium Euros. Word games and abstracts get a very good run at our place, though I'm mediocre at abstracts and super at word games, especially speed anagramming games. My new wife Scrabblette varies between tolerant and supportive of my hobby, and when we moved house in 2007 I got my own board game room! As she has her own income I am not so constrained in what I spend on games, and that led to an explosion in my collection, so much so that the game room is now overflowing. In general, I get whatever games I want, and some more, and then I have to figure out how to get rid of the excess. In 2006 or so I started a little project to download data from BGG and display various statistics about my gaming habits. That project took off and became the Extended Stats project, for which there is a guild. Since 2009 I have been spending more time at home with Scrabblette, and some time travelling, so have not had so much time and energy to play face-to-face. However I do enjoy understanding games from the viewpoint of mathematical systems and simulations, so I derive joy from the games whether I play them or not. In 2011 my dearth of gaming depressed me so much that I joined up at yucata.de to make sure that I was playing at least *something*. Consequently my best gaming partners now live overseas and interstate, but I am playing more games that I like. In 2015 I moved from Brisbane to Sydney, which upset the way I hosted Extended Stats on my home PC. I started looking into ways that project could be hosted in the cloud. In 2017 I got a job which included development in the cloud, so I learnt a lot and in particular figured out some very nice ways to host in the cloud. In about 2022, architectural problems and lack of time to fix them led to me disabling most of the site. Then in 2025 I lost that job, which gave me more time to work on the site, hooray! So now the site is back. On the other hand, I have not got out much since the pandemic (I really miss lockdown) and so I haven't been playing very many games. I'm hoping to establish a work-life balance. But now I have a dog... so it has to be a work-life-dog balance. If you need to hire a cloud developer with a dog in Sydney, let me know. Here it is: 10: Outstanding game. One of my all-time personal favorites. 9: Excellent game. Always a pleasure to play. Shines under most circumstances. 8: Very good game. Rarely disappoints me. High on my request/recommend list. 7: Good game. Usually willing to play. I might even request or recommend it. 6: OK game. Some fun or challenge at least. Enjoyable in the right circumstances. 5: Average game. I'm indifferent, but may be willing to play. 4: Below average game. I avoid playing and would need to be persuaded. 3: Poor game. Will strongly resist playing. 2: Very poor game. I refuse to play this. 1: Dead game. Seriously negative entertainment value. Black Hole of Fun.
