PRESENTATION I have a natural talent for language learning, translation & ‘wordsmithing’ in general. After studying French at school, it was easy to teach myself the similar Italian, Spanish & Portuguese. I've had a lifelong passion for language learning and world travel. After attending Oxford and Durham universities in England with a B.A. in German & Linguistics (Oxford, 1992) and a B.Sc. in Biopsychology & Biochemistry (Durham, 1995), I lived in California, in various parts of L.A. and Orange County (Laguna Niguel), from 1996 to 2000, in Mexico City for 6 months in 1998, in Hong Kong from 2000 to 2001 (two years, one failed marriage) and finally returned to the USA, where I lived in the Bay Area of northern California (Napa, Vallejo and Berkeley) until April 2003. Some people are sceptical or incredulous that I translate so many languages, which is why I'm always very willing to do a short, unpaid test translation from any of my source languages. I use Trados 6.0 and I've been translating for the last 12 years, and as a full-time occupation for the last 5 years. As I was lucky enough to have great German and French teachers at school in England, and I devoted myself fully to the study of those languages between the ages of 11 and 18, continuing with German for a further 3 years at Oxford. I managed to acquire a very in-depth knowledge of both Romance and Germanic European languages, which made it easy for me to pick up other Romance languages like Spanish, Italian, Catalan and Portuguese. I can also read Romanian, but not quite well enough to list it as one of the languages I translate. Similarly, I can read Swedish, Dutch and Danish, but again, I need to find more time to study the grammatical structures of these languages before I can translate them as fluently as German. After French and German, I first learned Spanish, after which Portuguese and Catalan come very easily. Italian, with its similarities to French and Spanish, and also its basis in Latin, which I also studied at school in England, was a natural followup. It was the frustration I experienced trying to read signs in the street in Hong Kong, when I lived there for two years, that prompted me to sit down and learn thousands of Chinese characters by heart. I can now translate Chinese almost as well as European languages, although I still speak very little Cantonese and I find it difficult to remember the correct stroke order when writing Chinese characters. However, I reckon I can recognize at least 10,000 characters, which is more than enough to translate business documents and technical manuals, especially with the help of several good dictionaries, but I avoid trying to translate any literature or poetry, which contains many rare or old characters that I simply don't understand. When I moved to the Bay Area and encountered native Japanese people, I decided I wanted to learn Japanese too, and I've been studying it for the past two years. My knowledge of written Japanese is now quite good, I know at least 5,000 kanji (characters), and my prior knowledge of Chinese helps considerably, as much of Japanese is derived, or borrowed, from Chinese. At the moment, I'm translating mostly medical, pharmaceutical, engineering and computing documents, which again is relatively easy compared to Japanese literature, poetry or newspaper/magazine articles. I will continue my study of Japanese until I feel comfortable translating any type of document.
