I had this posted for a while but took it down because it seemed a little pretentious, but it does pretty accurately reflect how I approach movie, so what the hell. My seven precepts for watching movies: 1. Movies are primarily an emotional and esthetic not an intellectual experience. While one of the pleasures of a good film may be not having your intelligence insulted, an interesting thesis, a clever puzzle or unimpeachable logic are not necessary for, or sufficient to make, a great film. 2. The best reasons for liking a movie are the ones you cannot articulate. Art is an expression whose form and content are one, so precisely defining what touches you and why is exceeding difficult. 3. Taste is a matter of taste, it does not need to be justified or defended, but should be educated and understood. 4. Movies should be judged in their totality. Half a good movie is not a good movie, it may be enjoyable and worth seeing, but that does not make it good. Great movies can, and most do, have their quirks; strange dialog, odd line readings, or technical flubs, that are of no moment and often become the object of affection, but if something significant in a film is bad, that has to be taken into consideration. A great part of artistry is success. 5. Movies should be judged on their own merits and not in regard to their place in a filmmaker’s body of work, cultural history, or even necessarily the history of cinema. A bad movie by a great director doesn't deserve extra points, and a good movie by a lesser director shouldn't be penalized. We all have affection for certain films stemming largely from nostalgia, but just because the film is widely loved by many in their youth doesn't magically convey greatness upon it. 6. Unless you are a professional film critic, misery is optional. You have no obligation to finish a film just because you start it. Nor are you prohibited from forming an opinion based on what you see. Experience teaches us that if a film is bad at the beginning it's most likely bad in the middle and bad at the end too. You should be open to the possibility of an exception but you're not required to expect one. Likewise there is no obligation or particular merit in sitting through something distasteful because of its reputation or place in film history, particularly if it's renown is based on its being distasteful. 7. There is an implicit bargain in watching a movie whereby the viewer gives their time and attention, essentially a small portion of their life, to the filmmaker and in return they receive enjoyment and possibly enlightenment. So the filmmaker has a responsibility not to waste the viewer’s time. Unless the story demands it movies should be under 120 minutes, comedies under 100. A two hour comedy is too long, period
