Les états modifiés de conscience et, tout particulièrement, les hallucinations perceptives, ont depuis longtemps intrigué les philosophes et les scientifiques s’intéressant à la cognition. On a depuis longtemps évoqué ces états anormaux pour, entre autres, cautionner le scepticisme philosophique, fonder l’idée de perception véridique, étayer des théories indirectes sur la perception, étudier la nature et les mécanismes de la conscience, délimiter nos concepts de santé mentale, explorer des thérapies en psychologie clinique, inspirer le travail des artistes et, enfin, pour comprendre ce que William James a appelé « les variétés de l’expérience religieuse ». Pourtant, à l’heure actuelle la phénoménologie précise de ces états demeure largement méconnue par la communauté philosophique et scientifique et, de ce fait, nos théories sur l’expérience hallucinatoire s’avèrent inadéquates ou dépassées –-à commencer par la définition d’Esquirol, encore largement répandue, selon laquelle une hallucination serait « une perception fausse ou sans objet ». En outre, les données que nous avons sur le sujet sont dispersées dans des disciplines aussi variées que la littérature, l’histoire, l’ethnobotanie, la psychiatrie, l’anthropologie, la psychologie, les neurosciences cognitives, la philosophie et l’art. Nous souhaitons aborder l’expérience hallucinatoire dans un contexte transdisciplinaire afin de : 1) mieux comprendre sa phénoménologie concomitante précise; 2) évaluer la validité des arguments épistémologiques et le bien-fondé de certaines postures dans la Théorie de la Perception; 3) dresser un état de l’art concernant les études empiriques s’y rattachant; 4) se questionner sur nos conceptions de la nature de la connaissance et de la conscience dans la philosophie et les sciences (post)modernes. Puisque nous nous intéressons à la nature et aux mécanismes de la perception (notamment visuelle) et, tout particulièrement, à la distinction entre les expériences dites ‘véridiques’’ et celles dites ‘hallucinatoires’, on porte une attention spéciale aux récits de ceux qui ont expérimenté avec des substances psychoactives et aux études empiriques concernant l’utilisation de ces substances. --------------------------------------------- Altered states of consciousness, and more particularly perceptual hallucinations, have puzzled philosophers and scientists interested in cognition for a long time. These so-called "abnormal" states of consciousness have often been evoked in order to, among other things : support philosophical skepticism, provide foundations for the idea of veridical perception, support indirect theories of perception, study the nature and processes of consciousness, set the boundaries for our mental-health conceptions, explore therapies in clinical psychology, inspire the work of artists and, last but not least, understand what William James called "the Varieties of Religious Experience". Nevertheless, as of today, the precise phenomenology of these states remains widely unknown to the philosophical and scientific communities. Given this, the current theories of hallucinatory experience seem to be unsuited or outdated, starting with the definition given by Esquirol in the 19th century --and still widely used-- according to which a hallucination is "a false perception or a perception without an object". Furthermore, relevant data about hallucinations are spread out across a rich variety of disciplines such as litterature, history, ethnobotany, psychiatry, anthropology, psychology, cognitive neuroscience, philosophy and art. Our goal is to approach the hallucinatory experience within a transdisciplinary framework in order to : 1) better understand its precise phenomenology, 2) test the validity of epistemological arguments and of specific stances within Theory of Perception, 3) review existing empirical studies on the topic, 4) inquire about the nature of knowledge and of consciousness in (post)modern philosophy and cognitive science. Since we are interested in the nature and mechanisms of perception and, specifically, in the distinction between 'veridical' and 'hallucinatory' experiences (and because of certain methodological problems), we shall specially focus on the accounts of those who have experimented with psychoactive substances and on the empirical studies concerning the use of those substances.
