With reviews, I feel the 5 star system is the most understandably concise. 10 stars leads to unnecessary scores like 2.8 or 2.75. You'll probably see less 2.75's on a 5 star system than you would a 5.5 on a 10 system (even then, decimals in the hundredths place feel useless, besides aggregates). If I think something is Bad, I can at least laugh at it with friends, but if it's Grody, I'd just look up clips of it online instead of rewatching it. If I appreciate some elements greatly, it can make up for elements I don't appreciate. Outstanding visuals can make up for a bland plot, while horrendous sound design can counteract great camerawork. How much I appreciate direction makes my ratings, explained in the review. I want to provide context for all my ratings. Art works are successful when the creator effectively conveys intended ideas to their intended audience (sometimes, that audience is themselves). Art, and anything else for that matter, can serve as mirrors for self reflection. Going deeper into a work means going deeper into ourselves: What does this make us feel, how does this make us think, and why? Can we choose to feel different despite these influences? Being conscious of a work's message gives us more choice to ingest it, and to recognize it elsewhere in our lives, giving us more self awareness, choice and control over ourselves and our experiences. I review movies to find out their influence on me. I write to better articulate myself and don't mind others seeing (Letterboxd has a great UI). I'm inspired by others who can articulate their views.
