I find it useful to read others' profiles when deciding whether I should try games that they recommend, so I feel obliged to write something here. I would be very pleased to hear from you if you find my opinions useful, or if you have anything in particular to recommend based on what you read here. My "Top 10" are the 10 games I would currently choose to retain if I had to sell all except 10 games. My "Hot 10" are games, most of which I have not played, which I am currently trying to get to the table! Firstly, how did I get into this hobby and why am I still enjoying it? Before bringing a family into this world, I was an avid player of computer games and, earlier still, role playing games. In fact, I fell handily into the geek/heavy metal/RPG stereotype which nearly persists to this day - with the exception that RPGs and computer games have been replaced by board games. I am a mathematician at heart, and the beauty I find in logic clearly influences my preferred games. That said, if this was the only influence, then "Go" would trounce all opposition. Sadly, I am forced to admit that I do not find Go as fun to play as modern board games. There is something about "theme" which is so appealing, and yet quite intangible... For me, unless your aim is to dress an abstract in pretty clothes, the importance of theme is in the way that it meshes with the games mechanics, and how well it does this seems to be a matter of taste. I am drawn towards games which have little randomness and I especially like systems that attempt to engage players continuously and/or resolve actions simultaneously. Diplomacy, despite its flaws, is a masterpiece. I find tile laying games strangely satisfying - almost therapeutic - and I tend to enjoy games which take advantage of the spacial nature of a board, e.g. those with area control or network building mechanics. That said, you will find plenty of exceptions to these vague attempts at generalisation. I try not to be a "collector". I would rather buy and sell in an attempt to distil the games I own down into a manageable, concentrated subset of games which are excellent and which have little overlap in terms of how they play. I think this is necessary because the process of enjoying a game naturally involves playing it many times, and with an industry so overwhelmed by "the new", it can be a struggle to do this!
