I can't remember whether my first game was PANZERBLITZ or 1914, but I quickly became fascinated by WW2 North Africa, and eventually accumulated 66 board wargames on that theatre, of which BEDA FOMM and ROMMEL IN THE DESERT were my absolute favourites. In 1984 I designed and programmed a simple North Africa game, SIEG IN AFRIKA (Rommel's riposte to Sieg im Westen), for the Commodore 64 and Simulations Canada. Curiously, I had been playing with computers about as long as I'd been wargaming ... my Ohio Scientific C1P was cheap and cheerful when you either spent a fortune on an Apple ][ or went without the fancy-dan graphics with an AIM/SYM/KIM or something on the S-100 bus. In fact, I can remember in 1969 when UBC upgraded the memory for its IBM 360 mainframe to a then-earth-shattering two megabytes! My GPSS programs still took over the full resources of the computer centre for about 15 minutes. For 10 years I did the cover art work for Simulations Canada's games while I was in Vancouver and Steve Newberg was in Nova Scotia. Without computers. That experience has made us comrades for life, but strangely I talk with him mush less often now that he lives about two hours from me, in North Oyster. In 1996 I took over editorship of the Strategy Gaming Society's monthly newsletter STRATEGIST, and did it for two years. The intense work probably was partially responsible for my subsequent divorce. But the editing bug had me in its grip, and when I finally gave up the monthly STRATEGIST in 1998, I created a quarterly journal of board wargame collecting, accumulating and hoarding called SIMULACRUM. It's still being published, but is an annual issue of 100 full-colour pages available in PDF format. My latest area of interest is the Russian Revolution, the Russian Civil War and the Russo-Polish War. And I am currently (May 2009) putting the finishing touches on a card game about the Russian Revolution, called PETROGRAD 1917.
