An artist is a person who creates art. This word is used most often for persons and activities of 'high culture'. That is for example drawing, painting, sculpture, acting, dancing, writing, filmmaking, photography, and music.... A scientist or mathematician can be called an artist.

People often ask how I got into taxidermy. My quick pithy response is usually that I grew up in Kansas. But to be honest, that answer is true, and extremely misleading. I was raised in the buckle of the Bible belt, the youngest child of a Lutheran and Mennonite fusion experiment. To say that there is a lot of open country in Kansas is quite the understatement, keep in mind that the entire population of Kansas matches that of Greater Cincinnati. There was a lot of space to breath, and a lot of isolation to force a few creative sparks. It was being raised in this Nature that facilitated my natural genetic tendencies to take things apart, understand them, and put them back together again. Would my artistic penchant for taxidermy have developed growing up as a city kid? I have no way of knowing. But I knew that it was the city that I wanted to spend my time in as an adult. After a typical Victorian Grand Tour (without the budget) I moved to Cincinnati on an Art Academy scholarship I have been in Cincinnati area since. I focus on producing work that recalls the inventive and exploratory spirit common to the naturalists of the Victorian age. In order to do this, I work in media often used to describe the natural world during this period; taxidermy, skeletal preparation, and display apparatus designed for preservation and functional education. They act as a way to engage viewers and invite them to experience the work that I'm so passionate about. The work of Meddling with Nature is all produced “from the ground up” and because of this, is heavily process oriented. In fact, I would argue that the process is far more important to me than the final results. Along with his ongoing Meddling with Nature project, I am also in involved in the documentary film project Voices and Faces of the Adhan as a line producer. I also have passionate beliefs in safe schools for GLBT students (particularly because of my Kansas roots.) As a result, I am also the chair of programming for GLSEN Greater Cincinnati. I also work on various independent films and theatrical productions in taxidermy oriented prop design and production. Though I don't typically work as the “traditional” taxidermist, I do actively accept commissions. As part of my public education commitment, I am also available for lecturing on topics related to Naturalism and the modern impact of Victorian ideals, Dissection in Art, Necropsy and Animal Pathology, Medical History and Philosophy from Hippocrates to Wilder Penfield, and Artistic anatomy for the Artist. I tend to be very easily engaged, and will answer questions with great joy. Again, first and foremost I am an educator, but to do that I must learn. Want to learn the wonderful art of “making new friends?” I am also accepting interns and apprenticeship positions, and no, you don’t need to be in school to work with me! For the past nine years, I have been analyzing business problems and planning solutions to build hardened, testable applications using the most appropriate tools and platforms for the job. This has given me great exposure on both front-end and back-end applications across a wide variety of languages, platforms, and standards. I aim to build experiences that captivate users and are a joy for developers to build and maintain.

Hello! My name is Kira Williams (they/she). I'm a genderqueer trans woman, a critical human geographer and a post-doctoral fellow at Wilfrid Laurier University. My research focuses on international migration, political geography and analytical methodology. I have been trained in, study and teach public policy, statistical programming and social theory. I graduated from my PhD in October 2018, with a thesis studying the use of semi-secret military operations to control the movement of migration by boat in the Central Mediterranean Sea. My advisor was Dr. Alison Mountz. I work as an academic, research, data scientist and policy analyst. I have recently taught courses on the following subjects: geographical information systems, statistical inference in policy science using R, public policy impact evaluation, geographies of violence and methodology in studying global governance. In the past, I've typically taught courses related to statistics, especially spatial analysis. Find out more about me at my professional website .
