Cedar Creek is just north of the small town where I grew up in western Montana in the 1950’s, not more than a 10 minute walk for a 10 year old and his best friend Gary along with his dog Ginger. We spent endless summer days fishing and exploring old abandoned homesteads along its banks .The big cedars and endless stands of pine with an occasional juniper tree were part of my fondest memories. The old cedar fence post standing in the middle of the creek with one old strand of rusty wire still on it caused me to wonder about the farmer that must have put it there. According to the state map Cedar creek was named Crystal creek but we kids decided who ever named the creek never loved it like we did, so we renamed it ourselves. Memories in Wood Boxes takes me back to those summer days when all I had to worry about was picking the right worm to use on my hook and keeping my eye on Gary so he didn’t beat me to the next (best) fishing hole. Ginger has long since been gone and my friend Gary left this earth some time ago, whenever I look at a Memories box all I have to do is close my eyes and I can still see Gary running ahead of me to the next fish hole. I hope my boxes will inspire you and maybe help you close your eyes and remember your best friend and the times you had together.
