Dear Santa's Little Secret One Exchange and BoardGameGeek Secret Santa, As far as any Secret Santa Gift Exchanges, I am doing more solo gaming and I am not super knowledgeable about the solo games out there. I would be thrilled to have someone who plays more solo games than me pick out a game. If the game can be played with multiple people, that would be great as well, but I'm not opposed to playing a SOLO ONLY game. I have developed a little preference for Game Themes but Mechanics are more important than theme for me. The themes I do prefer are Pirates, Dinosaurs, Space, Trading in the Mediterranean, Animals, Geographical, Robots, Farming. I'm a Euro gamer so I prefer that style of game experience rather than a "take that" type of game. I'll play a "take that" game but they're not my preference. I definitely favor game mechanics over artwork. I don't need a strong theme to pull me in. I love "The Castles of Burgundy Board Game" and the theme for that game is just slapped on. I enjoy any game where you chuck dice, which is why Roll For The Galaxy is another of my favorites. I don't mind the "luck" factor in a game. That's why I love games where dice are involved. However, don't let the dice comment sway your decision. Whatever I have on my Wishlist will be fine with me. I don't care for Legacy games or co-op games too much. There are some that are good but not my preference. I’m not into demonic, Cthulu or Horror type games, although I love the game “Horrified” because I grew up watching the Universal Studios monsters. Some of my favorite game mechanics would be Tile laying, Worker Placement, Dice Placement, Card Drafting, Engine Building, Hand Management, Pool Building, Trick Taking, Deck Building, "puzzley" games, and definitely Press Your Luck games. Pretty much anything with dice. I looove dice. I'm not nuts about auctions, bluffing, and traitor mechanics. I’m not sure these really would come into play for solo games. I guess I enjoy most game mechanics to be honest, if they work well with the theme or with each other. One of the game mechanics I don’t believe I’ve played too much is Pick-up-and Deliver. I wonder what that type of games I have that use that mechanic. I like solo games that have a defined win condition rather than a beat your own score type of game, but I do play beat your own score. I just prefer the win condition. Regarding "USED" games. As long as the components are in very good shape, I am fine with used games. I don't care about perfect boxes, just not crushed or ripped. The basic integrity of the original box is preferred. Taping a corner that ripped is acceptable. Damaged components or spills and stains are not. Oh, and the game must have the original rulebook so I can refer to it when I make rules goofs and I make quite a few of those. Finally, any game on my wishlist would make me very happy! I don’t buy from local game stores because I’m too busy to go to them. I shop online and will ALWAYS look for a way to get FREE SHIPPING. No website is my particular favorite. I try to spread the wealth around, so to speak. For those that would send food, candy, or things that can be eaten, I have no food allergies. Regarding expansions, I don’t have many expansions and I’m only interested in an expansion if it makes the game better. I reference Great Western Trail, Viticulture, and Orleans, for example. Those games are far much better with their expansions. I don't want to have an expansion just to have an expansion. I hope my rambling helped you. If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask.
