ARTIST’S STATEMENT Thank you for visiting my online portfolio. Growing up in Los Angeles during the ‘60s and ‘70s, I was introduced to art largely as a means of calming myself at night during chronic asthmatic episodes which began for me at the age of three. Not able to run much or play sports for fear of an attack, I turned to art to occupy my spare time and found it deeply satisfying. As a kid, I recall my parents’ friends liked what I did and said, “You should be an artist when you grow up!”. My reply was always, “Why should I wait that long?!" After discovering Art as my passion, I took up formal studies in a number of different media –from life drawing, pastels and sculpture, to black & white photography—much of which I am fortunate to have been mentored in by Ed Buttwinick, founder of The Brentwood Art Center. Yet it wasn’t until I identified my love of painting while taking lessons from Sueo Serisawa, one of the leading figures in the Los Angeles-based Modernist movement, that I felt I had really found a medium I could make my own. Upon entering university in the late-1970s, I found myself consumed by the rigor of Architecture studies at UC Berkeley and unable to find time for my artistic endeavors, which went dormant for many years. While I feel very fortunate to have forged a career that requires me to engage my creative vision and aesthetic sensibility in the branding, management and creative direction of consumer products, after being involved in corporate environments and working on teams for many years, I felt a calling several years ago to go back to painting and reclaim an outlet for my creativity in which the finished product does not need to meet criteria set by anyone other than myself. Now, having returned to painting, I delight in the familiar feel of brush bristles on canvas—but this time, I have replaced representational subjects with abstract forms and have chosen to work in acrylic media, instead of oils. I see this as a period of self-discovery and I am thoroughly enjoying the process. My work is the result of a deliberate creative discipline, which is separate from other aspects of my life. I begin each piece without much, if any, advance planning. Occasionally I sketch out relationships between elements before I find a composition I like; however, most often, these early decisions evolve as the work takes shape. Frequently I am inspired by a single color from which I sense an affinity and then use intuition as my guide to decide which other colors and textures yield the right relationships. From there, composition and contrast between textural elements and values become my main focus. I know my work is complete when I sense having struck the right balance among elements in a manner I find pleasing. This method allows me to focus inward and delve beneath my consciousness to tap into my intuition and emotions and bring forward a sense of equilibrium between the emotive and logical sides of who I am—the duality of which is often expressed through compositional tension between loose, gestural treatments of organic forms and more empirical geometric content. Focusing on abstract subject matter allows me to give greater importance to the role emotions play in responding to each piece; eliminating the need for representational accuracy heightens the subjectivity of experience.
