Photographer Don Morris grew up in Plymouth, Massachusetts, a skate rat, rude young snowboarder, and drummer in a hardcore band. From 1988 to 1991, he attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. At ART + AUCTION and I.D. magazines, Morris apprenticed with legendary graphic designer Tibor Kalman. In 1992, he joined the art show management company Sanford L. Smith & Associates, where he designed catalogues for art and antiques shows including the Art Dealers Association of America’s Art Show and the Outsider Art Fair, for which he was the founding designer. In 1994, Morris accepted a job at magazine publisher Harris Publications. After redesigning the logo of a fledgling title, the basketball magazine SLAM, Morris was named the publication’s Creative Director. At age 24, he was the youngest creative director in the company. Channeling the extreme-sports style of a youth spent skateboarding and snowboarding, when both were still underground pursuits, Morris shook up the staid world of sports design with a visual look defined by its in-your-face boldness. In 1997, Morris co-founded XXL magazine. A music magazine focused on hip-hop, which was then experiencing a creative explosion, XXL was a trailblazer. As Creative Director, Morris’ design—which infused graphic elements from the punk, tattoo, and hardcore scenes—came to define the look of hip-hop for an entire generation. It was during this period that Morris began to take a serious interest in photography. Enamored of the immediacy of photos, especially Polaroids, Morris found the medium best able to express his vision, which was spontaneous and raw. Completely self-taught as a photographer, Morris brought a DIY aesthetic to his portraits and still lifes. He was soon photographing all the top names in hip-hop. His subjects have included Lil Wayne, Nas, Jay-Z, Odd Future, Nicki Minaj, Wiz Khalifa, The Roots, Pharrell Williams, T.I., Beanie Sigel, Lil Kim, The Game, Young Jeezy, and Rick Ross, among many others. He teamed up with Footlocker in 2000 for the “My Sole Passion” campaign, traveling the country and photographing high school basketball stars with their sneaker collections. Also in 2000, his image of an overweight Eminem fan was recognized as one of the photos of the year by the German magazine MAX. In 2002, Morris photographed and designed rapper 50 Cent’s career-launching mixtapes, GUESS WHO’S BACK and 50 CENT IS THE FUTURE. Morris’ first solo show was exhibited at Max Fish (New York, NY) in 2003. He was part of the group show “Under the Influence” at the powerHouse Arena (Brooklyn, NY) in 2011. In 2012, he was included in the group show “Stolen Souls” at Mishka (Brooklyn, NY). He started his HOLY MOUNTAIN series in 2011. Don Morris most recently was the Creative Director of THE SOURCE, the longest-running hip-hop magazine in the world, which is also known as “the Bible of hip-hop.” Morris help lead the Source from it’s roots in print to it’s current digital incarnation.
