Let me start by saying I have never been confused about what I would be. When I was 14 years old I tattooed myself for the first time; a devil head done with a sewing needle and Bic pen ink, needless to say it didn’t heal very well. I have been drawing since I could crawl, and growing up all I thought about was using it for a career. I have never been afraid of the hard work required to get there, I started my pursuit of becoming a professional tattoo artist by getting tattooed at a very young age by professionals. For the benefit of the shops concerned we'll say I was 17. Some of the guys who taught me in the beginning were Tom Gunn, Jimbo North and Gary at Pair'O'Dice tattoo in Victoria, BC. I had a very rocky start to my career as an artist. I was too busy living in a criminal drug induced haze which resulted in a fair amount of time being spent in prison. Luckily, that was long before TLC hyped the industry and many artists were just as messed up as me. I am not saying anything bad about the shows that have help make our industry more socially acceptable, but it was different back then. We weren’t idolized at all, in fact I felt more like an outcast. In and out of various shops the easy money continued to fuel my addiction until I received a federal sentence. I served out a little more than two years of my sentence in the penitentiary’s of BC. By this time tattoo shows were quite popular and in turn so was I. As a tattoo artist in prison you have it as good as it gets. Near the end of my sentence I found forgiveness from my family who were giving their lives to Christ, so I followed suit and gave my life and heart to Jesus. I quit using drugs, drinking, and tattooing. I thought that was the end of my art written in pain. When I got out of prison I moved to a new town, worked hard, and refused to tattoo. I was white knuckling it daily to stay clean and sober. After awhile I has landed myself back in full blown addiction though and went to a year long christian treatment center. Very few make it through and I was blessed enough not only to complete my treatment but then to stay on as an addictions worker. The pay was minimal so a friend of mine, Jason Victor, encouraged me to blow the dust off the old machines and start tattooing again. To this day he is one of the strongest Christian men I know, he honors his wife, cares for his children, and supports his friends all with the love of Christ. I started working at a local studio on weekends but when the ministry I worked for learned that I had started tattooing again I was accused of all kinds of “un-godly” things; tattooing being one of them, and shortly after I was let go. In this time I held on tightly to Christ and my tattoo machines. I was left with very few options and I thank God I met Phoenix of Phoenix Tattoos in Surrey, BC where I helped him open his shop and spent many nights sleeping at his house or the shop. He did so much for me and he will always be my brother. After we opened, I met my fiance who began apprenticing at the shop, Claire Rattee, and it was love at first sight. I also had the privilege of reuniting and working with a great friend and tattoo mentor, Cliff Jarvis. After a year I had decided it was time to move and open my own studio in northern BC. DivineInk has been open since November 2011 and we are a private tattoo and piercing studio by appointment only. Our goal is to eventually target the Christian demographic, pastors and church leaders etc, in Canada providing a spiritually safe environment to stay for a few days and be tattooed and blessed by fellow followers of “the way”. At DivineInk we are different because when I really look back that’s why I wanted to tattoo … to be different !
