It all started when I was first introduced to electronic music visiting the Zootz nightclub in Portland Maine in 1988. Being exposed to the likes of Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, The Smiths, New Order, Depeche Mode, and Skinny Puppy immediately hooked me into the world of underground dance music and the need to dance. I found myself buying records and being enamored by the DJ. Listening to the way songs were tied together to take you on a musical journey was the inspiration. The first DJ's I was exposed to were Kris Clark, Dale Charles, Dave Park, and Deb Dufresne. All of which motivated me to DJ and were all mentors to me in the art of turntableism. Purchasing a Realistic mixer (no cross fader) from Radio Shack I was able to start mixing tracks with my Fisher turntable and a Technics SL-J1. Both of these turntables did not have pitch control and the cartridge for the SL-J1 was part of the cover. I eventually upgraded to Numark TT-1400 turntables (which had pitch) and a used Numark mixer. This gave me the tools to put together a demo tape. By 1989, I had my first gig at Kris Clark's club the Wherehouse. This club was 18+ Chem-Free and was right next door to Zootz. I played a combination of industrial, techno, new beat, acid-house, electronic, and alternative. Soon after I had residency at Zootz, Tracy Chaplin's club P3 (Pleasure, Pain, and Propaganda), Goodnight Ogunquit, and Decadance. As electronic music continued to progress, so did the events. In 1992, KC and The Sunrise Gang started throwing parties. Djing at these parties was a gateway into music, friendships, and my DJ career. In 1993, I took up residency at Manray in Cambridge, Mass. Soon after, I moved to Boston, Mass and started DJing at the now famous (or infamous) after-hours nightclub the Loft. Djing with Brian Mayhem, 333mgee, and Jason Mouse as well as sharing the night with DJ Bruno and Armand Van Helden who were on the house floor. I soon got a job as a buyer for Boston Beat Records owned by Felix and Raffi where I was able to have a direct link into new music. I then met Al Fougy who began Boston's first all Drum 'n' Bass night with me as the sole resident. I decided to bring on Jason Mouse, Ian Timestretch, and Casper, to share the burden. We then had MC Mike D step up at the mic. Shortly after, Al started up Sessionz. This is when things were at it's peak and I Dj'd at various cities including: New York City, Washington D.C., Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Chicago, Ontario, Montreal, Indianapolis, and Atlanta. In 1997 I moved to Washington D.C. where I met up with the 2-Tuff crew and shared residency at Urban Space with DJ Slant, Stress, MC Ness, MC Mecha, Peter, and Andy. Also had residency at Deep with DJ Chris Kaos. One piece to note is being part of the 'Three The Hard Way" crew which included Dieselboy, Jason Mouse, and myself. Ironically, the three of us never DJ'd together at the same gig.
