Well, I might as well start at the beginning. I was born and raised in England and, because my parents were Polish, spoke only Polish at home. My first exposure to strategy games was being taught chess at school at the tender age of eight or so. Like many boys of my era, my introduction to wargaming was through playing with Airfix tanks and soldiers - we were all steeped in WWII which, after all, had only ended in the previous decade. It would be some years, however, before I would employ any formal wargame rules. By the age of 14 I was representing the school in chess tournaments but was getting a little bored with learning other peoples' opening moves; I wanted something more varied and challenging. So I learned Chinese chess, Shogi and Go. That year I asked for and was given a Christmas present of a Mahjong set. It was not long thereafter that I heard of organised wargaming and obtained my first rules in the form of a little book called [i]Battle! Practical Wargaming[/i] by Charles Grant. I was hooked. My friends and I fought many table-top battles over the following years. It was inevitable that I should also get sucked into board wargaming; the first issue of my subscription to Strategy & Tactics was number 29 [i]USN[/i] and I have received every issue since then. This, in part, explains the size of my game collection. Whilst I consider myself a collector I am nonetheless foremost a player of games. In 1979 I left the UK and moved to Papua New Guinea where, surprisingly, I found many opportunities for gaming. Three years later saw me moving again, this time to Hong Kong, where I lived until 2016, before moving to my new home, Malta. Although there is undoubtedly a focus on wargames, I love all kinds of games and am very happy playing Euros when the opportunity arises. I was, for many years, the chairman of the Hong Kong Society of Wargamers (www.hksw.org), which meets twice monthly and has a membership in excess of 80 keen gamers. I was therefore fortunate to have many opponents with lots of opportunities for gaming. Whilst moving to Malta has somewhat reduced my gaming options, I still have face-to-face opponents locally and expect (and encourage) regular visits from gaming chums from overseas. I am always happy to hear from gamers passing through Malta, so if you are heading this way, drop me a line and we'll see if we can get together for a chat over a drink and possibly a game or two . . .
