Pleasantries (Chicagoland, IL.),  Pleasantries is an eclectic experimental rock band from the Chicago suburbs that focuses on intertwining quality melodies with complex instrumentation to create rather unique compositions. Often laying catchy melodies over odd time signatures, the sound of Pleasantries is rarely the same from song to song, often juxtapositioning beautiful, serene moments with heavy hitting instrumentation across a wide range of genres. Inspired by progressive and experimental giants like King Crimson, Yes and Mr. Bungle but with pop sensibilities taken into account from classic art rock artists like Talking Heads and David Bowie, a complex web of musical images appear. In their song “Catch is Baiting Us Back,” an emotional tone is set at the very outset of the track and maintained throughout, with various buildups and valleys of intensity throughout. After a instrumentally focused intro with a simple vocal melody tying it together, a set of harmonized, looping guitars is quickly built up that the majority of the song is laid upon. Rich with layered melodies and poly-rhythms, the song is brought to life with a chorus of vocals bringing a foundation to the chaotic setup of the track. The ferocity is brought down for the final time before the songs brief yet instrumentally complex and heavy ending, an ending both unexpected yet fitting for such an epic track. The song was written by bandleader Andy Markantonatos and performed by himself with help from bandmates Campbell Markantonatos on the fretless bass and Sam Ayers on rhythm guitar. This is the first single released from the groups upcoming LP, which will be the follow up to their first full length album from last year, the self-titled “Pleasantries” record. They’re very excited to share what they're working on in the coming months.
