PLoTS is a word with several meanings in different contexts. That is how we like to approach our music. In Dutch it is the word for ‘sudden’ and reflects our need for improvisation. Most of the PLoTS music is material which has the best of both worlds: composition and improvisation. That ́s why we like to call our material ‘comprovisations’. All the bandmembers contribute to the sound and the material. PLoTS sounds colourfull, obstinate, rocks hard, plays gentle, narrative and playful. The music is an eclectic collection of freedom, expression, text and words, modern jazz and songlike structures.

PLoTS are: Laia Genc (piano), Esmee Olthuis (saxophones), Tessa Zoutendijk (violin), Simin Tander (voice) ‘PLoTS’ is a highly democratic Dutch/German quartet, in which all four voices are of equal importance. ‘Plots’ is also a dutch word for ‘sudden’,reflecting the improvisational character of these four-part conversations. The music of PLoTS combines the best of both worlds- of both composition and improvisation, each member contributing an equal share to both the sound and the material. The music is wide-ranging: it is colourful and idiosyncratic, narrative and playful, at times muscular or gentle. The compositions form an eclectic collection of freedom, expression, text and lyrics, modern jazz and songs. Each of the PLoTS musicians has her own recognisable style and can build on an established reputation in Europe, especially in the Netherlands and Germany. The special project "Songs From The Edge" with songs by Hazel Leach will be out on CD this April (JazzHausMusik) and will be available via this website. “Songs from the Edge” were written by Hazel Leach as an exploration of the various symptoms of psychosis after the suicide of a friend. The lyrics were inspired by a series of conversations about the illness with patients, friends and family. Each song deals with different aspects of the disturbed sense of identity and loss of contact with reality which are common symptom of psychosis. The four-way musical discussions of PloTS supply an expressive and chilling commentary to the texts, a reminder of Albert Einstein’s belief that reality - for all of us- is just an optical delusion. Simin Tander (VOCALS) The German Afghan vocalist Simin Tander can tell stories even without words, trusting her music to do the speaking, with her voice as an universal instrument. Improvisation, impulsiveness and spontaneity are parts of her musical nature. Within the past years Simin has quickly grown to one of Holland’s most promising and acknowledged young jazz artists, e.g. with her performances at the North Sea Jazz Festival, The BIMHUIS, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Women In Jazz Festival (Germany), JazzAhead! (Germany), Catania Jazz (Italy), Bohemia Jazz Fest (Czech Republic), Hong Kong Jazz Festival (CH), Madrid Jazz Festival (Spain). ******************************************************************************* Tessa Zoutendijk (VIOLIN) is one of the exponents of a new generation of violinplayers in improvised music. Claiming herself originally a street musician, she is carrying herselfalways forward and now works in the fields of jazz, folk, theatre and modern improvisation. She plays with the Dutch group ‘I Compani’, has her own stringquartet ‘Kaaskwartet’ and is a steady member of youththeatre compagny ‘Stella Den Haag’. ******************************************************************************* Laia Genc ( PIA N O ) is always searching for her own very particular way to express in music. Creating her own sound using extended techniques playing the piano and her fine composition skills she is walking the line inbetween written structures and the freedom of improvised music. With lots of1 musical charme she is combining jazz, improvisation and playfulness to a music very personal and alive, telling stories unheard and painting imaginary scenes to the listener ́s inner eye. ******************************************************************************* Esmée Olthuis (ALTSAXOPHON, SOPRANOSAXOPHON, C- MELODY, BLOCKOPHON) As a musician Esmée Olthuis is always seeking the essence of music, the experience of the moment, a connection between worlds of perception and the potential of my play. ‘ I love contradiction: improvisation and composition, abstraction and lyricism, rawness and refinement, silence and rowdiness, order and chaos.’Esmée is leader of the Tetzepi Bigtet, is composer and initiator of many projects. Esmée is an expressive alt with a sound like liquid gold. Her play is lyrical, expressive, unorthodox, and all her own.”
