Dear Santa 2025, I'll honestly tell you that i'm a bit out of touch with what's been coming out these days. A lot of what's on my wish list is from last year, and I'm fine with that since I am still interested in them. If you want to take a stab at picking something out, I'm 100% fine with that too. I'll try to sum up what I look for in games. I gravitate towards heavier euro games in the 1-2 hour range. Theme is less important and cooperative is rarely an option. I tend to look for unique mechanics or a new way of doing something and not just 10 different things tossed together to make it complicated. And generally speaking, if a game is winning a lot of awards because it appeals to the masses, I tend to ignore it (e.g. SdJ). I'm more than happy to answer questions and how I feel about specific games if it would help give you ideas. And as always, I am happy to wait for a game to become more widely available as long as I know I haven't been forgotten. Regardless of what you choose, I will be grateful as I love being part of BGG's Secret Santa. Can't wait to hear from you Santa. __________________________________ I have always enjoyed playing games. I can still remember sitting on the living room floor to play Clue on my 10th birthday, and playing Life with my cousins each Thanksgiving and Christmas at grandma's house. I still have a fondness for many of the games I played as a kid, so much so that my wife bought for me the version of Life which I grew up playing (\tangent The new ones are crap with random salary values and mortgage payments. If you ever played it with your kid(s), you know what I'm talking about. \tangent off). I also keep my copies of Fireball Island and Battle Masters available for the special local events. I went through years of playing Magic: the Gathering, which was replaced by the rebirth of Netrunner in 2012. However that slowly dwindled as I got burnt out from not having enough time to dedicate to learning new cards and building new decks each month. My new vice has been (re)building the local Heroscape community, but I'll get to that later. Fast forwarding to today. I've been playing "modern strategy" games for almost 20 years, since being introduced to Puerto Rico, Power Grid and El Grande by a coworker. I had only ever played M:tG and probably a single game each of Zombies! and Settlers before that. I hit the hobby running buying Ticket to Ride Europe as my first game and quickly added Stone Age, Vikings and a few others to my collection. We initially played in a tightly knit group with 2-3 other guys but they were gradually taken by wives and other hobbies so I branched out to play at the local stores. Among the 3-4 area stores, there is a gaming night every Monday through Thursday. I don't get to make it to many of them due to other hobbies and general life commitments, so I invite people over every couple weekends to scratch the gaming itch. Sometimes it might be a small group of just 3-4 players, others might be larger 15+ person gatherings. We have been very fortunate to have a large local community that I have opportunities to play almost anything I would want, without having to buy it myself. Flashing back to my Heroscape comment. I played Warhammer for a few years so latching onto Heroscape was easy. Despite having no one to play it with, I continued to quietly purchase various lots through Craigslist and shoved them into the attic. A move in March 2016 was an eye-opening experience for my wife as I lowered box after box from the attic. She was under the impression that since she didn't enjoy playing, and I wasn't actively playing, that I didn't own much. Good news, she didn't kill me. The better news, the new house provided the space to create my own Heroscape war room. Once I had the dedicated space, I quickly expanded my collection and created a place for some friends to play regularly.
