The Book and Periodical Council was formed in 1975 (as the Book and Periodical Development Council) to provide a forum for discussion for associations and to serve as a venue in which mutual concerns are addressed and projects undertaken for the benefit of Canadian writing and publishing. Some of our achievements include: * Establishment of the Canadian Children's Book Centre * Establishment of the Canadian Telebook Agency * Development and ongoing operation of the Book Industry Freight Plan * Various publications * Sponsorship of the annual Freedom to Read Week, and production of an annual information kit on issues of intellectual freedom * Formation of the Canadian Give the Gift of Literacy Foundation * Responsibility for the studies that led to formation of CANCOPY, now Access, the Canadian Copyright Licensing Agency * Establishment of The Word on the Street annual bookfairs * Administrative support for small and new organizations in the book and periodical field The purpose of the Council is: * To increase the level of awareness and use of Canadian materials by the general public and in educational systems at all levels; * To ensure that the public has an adequate and representative range of Canadian books and periodicals in sales outlets, library systems and educational institutions in Canada; * To strengthen the book and periodical distribution systems in Canada; * To support the development of new and existing Canadian-owned companies and encourage their growth and expansion so that they may become the major segment in each sector of the book and periodical publishing and distribution industries; to discourage the expansion of foreign ownership in all sectors of these industries; * To improve market conditions and contractual arrangements for Canadian writers, and in other ways to enhance their financial rewards and professional recognition; to improve the promotion and publicity given to Canadian writers and their work; * To encourage the development of writing and publishing projects that are of social and cultural importance; * To improve the cultural and economic climate in which the Canadian book and periodical industries exist, for their enhancement and the enrichment of all Canadians.
