51 year old theoretical computer scientist, turned teacher 18 years ago (math/cs), now back to teaching A.I. at university. Virtually everyone in my life was and still is gaming, from grandma to the kids, friends, many professors. Despite my mathematical background, I almost completely play by my gut. My "Genotype" is rather extreme (https://ekung.shinyapps.io/user_genotypes/) 99% Social (love Twister and Time's Up!) 90% Theme (SciFi, civs, sports, construction) 90% Euro (Knizia and Feld still rule supreme) 1% Wargamer (just sucks :-) ) [b]The Good[/b] Medium STRATEGY, little randomness, few but TOUGH DECISIONS, lots of INTERACTION, relatively SHORT length (10-90 minutes) and strong THEME preferred (other than soccer or cats). I particularly love BUILDING: civilizations, cities, empires, engines, tableaus, decks - anything really. Games have to be elegant and STREAMLINED, not layer on layer, not score upon score, just for the sake of complexity. I was clearly game-socialized in the mid-90ies, Catan and El Grande. HAND MANAGEMENT, AUCTIONS, DRAFTING, WORKER PLACEMENT and COLLECTIBLE card games are most appreciated; CO-OPs, with or w/o TRAITOR, are also a favorite. I also value intelligent KID games and simple but tactically interesting GATEWAY games. EXIT/ESCAPE the room is great, too. And there's this soft spot for silly "PARTY games" (dexterity, drawing). [b]The Bad[/b] Unless they've got to do with WORDS. These, and ABSTRACTS, I really loathe. Apparently, I also have a problem with unmotivated TILELAYING, GRID COVERING in particular (Odin/Isle of Cats). Building decks the old fashioned way is great (Magic and other CCGs), DECK-BUILDING games on the other hand are almost always bad (including Dominion). The two phases (build, then play) should either by separate, or I should choose from all (e.g. Gloomhaven, Spirit Island). But random cycling through a growing deck is plain boring. STORY, especially DETECTIVE games is another genre I can't stand. While I like many small exit-style puzzles, I find one large, vague story dull. [b]And the Ugly[/b] I consider "LEGACY" a bad concept for two simple reasons: The price doubles, and worse, the TIME needed usually explodes tenfold. A game should be ready out of the box; variants are great, but should be always optional on/off style. I refuse to commit to one legacy game if I can own resp. play three - or twenty - different normal games instead! I feel equally strong about two other recent trends: UNIQUE and APP-BASED: both just terrible! I want to forget the digital world when I'm gaming. (While I consider the Internet the greatest invention of humankind, I consider all-present Social Media on Smartphones its worst) Former, now obsolete obscure fact: If I had to decide between Magic on one side or my 1000+ other games combined on the other, I really would have had to think hard. (Rendered obsolete by the incredible Spirit Island, which bumped MtG to #2) And the Oscars go to: Best Director: Reiner Knizia Best Editing: Stefan Brück Best Original Screenplay: Friedeman Friese Best Adapted Screenplay: Prospero Hall Best Art Direction: Michael Menzel Best Cinematography: Martin Wallace Best Effects: Corey Konieczka Best Score: Stefan Feld Best Short: Richard Garfield Best Animated: Marco Teubner Best Documentary: Richard Rahdo Ham Lifetime Achievement: Wolfgang Kramer Golden Raspberry Awards: Worst Effects: Rudy Games for the blatant shill ratings here and at Amazon Worst Director: Jacques Zeimet for the broken and stupendously boring Kakerlaken-Duell Worst Original Screenplay: Leo Colovini for a run of spectacularly dry games Worst Adapted Screenplay: Ralf Bruhn and Dennis Lohausen for changing Bonfires theme from interesting Aztec gods to annoying childish gnomes Worst Editing: Viktor Kobilke for his repetitive and redundant more-on-this-later rulebook approach Worst Art Direction: Andreas Resch for any face he's ever drawn The family's 2022 top list looks a bit aggressive (we're not ;-) 1. Their first single ‘What Did the Christians Ever Do For Us?’ was single of the week in both the NME and Melody Maker. In 1993 they signed to UK Indie label Lemon Records, who released their first album ‘You Are What You Eat’. This was followed by 1994's' ‘Butterfly Effect'’ which was produced by Stereolab producer Paul Tipler and Garret 'Jacknife' Lee, U2/REM etc. The album contained one of their most memorable tracks, “Laughter Lines”, a song Morrissey said, “should be Number One forever” and at Morrissey’s behest Sack opened for him on his 1999 Oye Esteban World Tour taking in mainland Europe, the UK & Ireland, and the USA. The former Smiths singer also included “Colorado Springs' ' (from ‘You Are What You Eat’) on his hand-picked NME CD "Songs to Save Your Life' ' before inviting the band to open for him again on a European tour. 2001 saw ‘Adventura Majestica’ come out on the band's own Jetset Junta label and was the last official release from the band until August 2021 saw the band return with their first new material in 20 years with a brand-new single “What A Way To Live” which received massive nationwide airplay in Ireland as well as many great accolades across the board including Newstalk’s Tom Dunne declaring it his ‘single of the year’. May 2022, saw the 25th Anniversary edition of their classic album ‘Butterfly Effect’ on vinyl for the first time ever to renewed acclaim for the album from fans and media alike, with The Charlatans' Tim Burgess hosting one of his hugely popular Twitter listening parties for the newly reissued album.
