[u][b]Letter to Santa 2021[/b][/u] OK, so this is now my fifth year doing this Secret Santa, and I look forward to it immensely each year! I have had a very good year for gaming in some respects, but it has been quite tough in others. There have only been a handful of occasions where I have been able to play games with people I don't live with, which has been rubbish. I know that I am probably in a much more fortunate position than others in that we have all remained healthy through these tough times, but with the way the Pandemic has been handled in this country I am finding a lack of socialising over games to be hard on my mental health. We also lost our FLGS over the past year, so I don't have anywhere nearby to see games in progress anymore, which has meant I am not as up-to-date on new releases as in previous years. However, I have played a [i]lot[/i] of games at home, which has helped immensely. My wife is my regular gaming partner, so we almost exclusively play games that work well at 2 players. Her favourites are Everdell, Terraforming Mars and Great Western Trail, and recently Lords of Waterdeep has joined the list. We have also played a lot of Wingspan, Tapestry and two new games from this year - Aquatica and Genotype. She likes games where you can build something, usually some sort of engine, and then crucially let it run to see what it does. She also like objectives, so having something to sim for during her turnd. She doesn't like overly harsh games where you are under a lot of pressure, or games where there are too many options. She also hates overt player conflict, or any sort of "take that" in games. We have taken the Mandatory Quests out of LoW for example, and I can only play the ones that remove cubes if she doesn't have any of them! My son is also starting to play a lot of games, though less now he is at school during the week and wants to play with his toys at the weekend. He really wants to play "Daddy's games" but we are trying to add complexity slowly. This year, he has been desperate to play Ticket to Ride, but the main game is just too long for him at the moment, and he can't independently work out where the places are. I was given the London version for my birthday though, and this he loves - it's the perfect blend of TTR and time for him. He even managed to beat my wife and I last time we played with no help at all! #ProudGamerDad :D As for me, I agree with my wife in a lot of respects. In addition to the previously mentioned games, my two favourites are Nations and Clans of Caledonia, so I like games where the theme comes through in the mechanics. I'm a fan of Worker Placement games where there is something interesting about the workers or the spaces, and I like deck building too. My most played game is still Legendary Marvel, and I am averaging more than a play a day of this over the course of the past year. I have all the big box expansions now, and almost all of the smaller ones, but with the supply issues the new expansions are not yet available in this country yet - I'm looking forward to getting them when they are! As for my Wishlist, I have to say that I am finding it quite hard to figure out what to put on there. There are a lot of things at the top that are expansions for games we have already, and that eventually I will end up getting, but new games are difficult to grade. I've got to the point where my shelves are full, so a new game has to displace an old one to stay in the collection, and I've been doing this for a couple of years now so the collections is mostly good games we like! For instance, Lost Ruins of Arnak was a game I thought would be right in our wheelhouse - deck building and WP with an obvious goal to aim for, but it fell completely flat in our two plays and is on the Trade/Sell pile. Whilst I would obviously be thrilled with something off my Wishlist, I am also happy for you to make a suggestion based on what we like. If there is a game you know well that you want to gift, then go for it! I am also open to pre-loved games, as long as they are in very good condition, though punching out the cardboard does give a lot of pleasure. ;) Thank you for reading, and if there is anything else you want to know please feel free to get in touch.
