The movement, which is characterized primarily by interest in popular culture and the imaginative interpretation of commercial products, led to a new and easily accessible approach to art. From quirky to critical, the pieces by the pop artists of the 1950s and 1960s have interpreted contemporary life and events. In addition to the unique pictorial language itself, the artist's treatment of the theme helps to define the genre. The majority of Pop Art artists began their careers in commercial art: Andy Warhol was a very successful magazine illustrator and advertising graphic artist, Ed Ruscha was also a graphic designer, and James Rosenquist began his career as a poster painter. Audiovisual duo, Sculpture, aka musician Dan Hayhurst and visual artist Reuben Sutherland, combine animation, video art and unstable electronic music to uniquely synaesthetic effect. Catching a live AV set by Sculpture is to enter a maximal portal into their visionary aesthetic. Genre tropes, temporal indicators and perceptual associations are reconfigured in the moment seeking multisensory overload. A volatile simultaneity links the duo’s visual turntablism and metamorphic sound forms. With a camera mounted on a Technics turntable, Sutherland creates kaleidoscopic animations with a chaotic library of zoetropic prints. Photo collage, electromechanical imaging and cutting edge digital technique combine in fever dream patterns and op-art cuts. Hayhurst misuses samplers, reel to reel tape recorder, walkman and CDJ deck to create an analogue/digital hybrid of electronic pop and experimental splatter that maximises the results of unexpected combinations.
