19, charismatic, brimming with talent, smart as a whip Sejal Shah is a songwriting storm waiting to burst on the industry. Full of life, and as smart and thoughtful in person as in her writing, it’s hard to not be enraptured by her lyrical stories. She balances her identity from both India and the United States by writing ‘what’s true to her’, but in fact achieves a universal relatability. Sejal’s words are reminiscent of artists like Maisie Peters, mxmtoon, Sasha Sloan. It would be unsurprising if she soon joins their ranks as singer/songwriters, or even starts writing for/with them. Indeed, it’s difficult to believe that writing songs is a relatively recent endeavour for her. She first uploaded a song to Youtube in January 2020 and has since taught herself production all the way to her newest song ‘Generation Z’ – her first commercial release across digital platforms. ‘Generation Z’ is a powerful work of art. The chorus is likely to get stuck in your head, and it has the potential to become an anthem for the youth. It perfectly captures the anguish of a generation dealing with crisis after crisis, touching on mental health, climate change and the political backdrop. All of this is disguised in a catchy happy refrain, a perfect metaphor for the TikTok generation. The rawness of the bedroom pop just enhances the song.
