Hello. I am a painter from Athens, Greece. The name I'm using here is not my real name. I just happen to be interested in Japanese martial arts, painting and culture in general. [b]What I play:[/b] I mostly play economic, political and light history-based wargames. I also have couple of very light games that are suitable for a friend gathering in my collection. [b]Which game features I love:[/b] I love direct negotiations. I love games that require good positioning and maneuvering on the board. I love skillful play as opposed to rolling dice. I love resource management. Above all, I love feints, bluffs, setting traps and deceiving my opponents. Setting successful traps is what I love the most. Not many boardgames have this feature: you mostly know what you should expect from your opponent. :ninja: [b]Components[/b] A good board game map is a mounted map, or a wooden board. Good components are wooden components. Chess is the best produced game until today. A decent wooden chess set is in my book far superior to anything flashy produced in the U.S. . ;) [b] What I don't play:[/b] I don't play games with a fantasy or space theme. I generally don't play ameritrash for many reasons. I lately avoid playing games that are not in my collection or my wishlist as I decided that I don't have the brain capacity and interest in learning rules of games that I won't dedicate myself upon. Luck in gameplay I accept if properly worked by the designer but I tend to dislike games that leave even a slight possibility that the winner will be decided by a random factor. [b] On consims[/b] Although I study history, I don't accept the term "simulation" for a boardgame, even if it has a 100 page rulebook. Historic games better be lightly based on history and focus more on skillful, strategic gameplay. Reading/learning huge rulebooks only to end up calculating dice odds? Thanks, I'll pass. :shake: [b]Wargames and luck[/b] Luckless, skill-based play is superior to cards and cards are superior to dice. Dice is the lowest form of battle resolution. Dice are used as a means of abstraction mostly, but complexity and uncertainty don't have anything to do with randomness. There is no luck in life. Everything is for a reason. [b]Weuros are the future[/b] Short and to-the-point rulebooks, lack of fiddly, unnecessary details, controlled luck factor, short playing time, good production value. I dare to predict that we'll see some more of these games in the future as there is a demand for them, and they will only get better by time. :meeple: [b]Why blockgames?[/b] They have wooden components(no need for tweezers :yuk: ); they have Fog of War; they offer 4 distinct strength points(as opposed to 2 of paper chits); they have usually simple rulebooks. They are visually superior to hex and counter. The most classic ones have dice but still I prefer them. Let's hope that we'll see more diceless and then luckless ones- they slowly start to appear now.
