[b]Me[/b] (sometimes as depicted in avatar) I was born into a dark age - in retrospect, aren't we all? Fortunately I managed to elude infantile lobsterism and childhood parasites, the serious ones anyway. Most of my early years were spent blind, penniless, and insane, but I've since had the good fortune to be cured of at least the first two. Raised the humble son of a midwife and a tinker-merchant, I initially aspired to the office of chirurgeon. This didn't suit me, however, so to the consternation and even horror of my family I applied to a leading wizard academy. Even worse, I was accepted (thanks to a wide facility with cantrips and an unusually strong grasp of alchemy - the latter being fairly rare in wizarding circles). Wizarding, being poorly understood by the populace, was not a profession a beaming parent could exactly boast to the local burgermeister about! That wizards are often arrogant and brilliant and malodorous (not necessarily a good combination) certainly did not help. Multiplying the social difficulties of my dear parents: I became enamored of a demon woman from the far eastern reaches, a fascinating creature whom I had met through ritual combat. She subsequently seduced me and sucked out my soul. Contrary to the custom of her people, I was not then discarded, but rather retained as a plaything. Lucky me! The wizarding academy was excellent. I learned much, and learned that I knew even less than what I had learned (you might wonder how that is possible, but I tell you that the ways of wizards are well-nigh inscrutable to the unindoctrinated). Although rumored a promising pupil, I left the academy under a cloud of malaise. The wizards really *were* arrogant, really *didn't* care about the plight of the commoner (with rare exception, of course) but really *didn't* smell as badly as rumored and I didn't want to spend the rest of my years in their company. The wizarding workplace was too stressful and egocentric, so I...possessed a brief aspiration to become a baker, specifically an unremarkable but contented pastry chef - this possibility was eliminated by the arrival of our first offspring, a feisty little half-demon girl. Henceforth I devoted the majority of my waking efforts to the containing, grooming, and loving of this far-from-helpless little being. Demon children, it is well known, never sleep for more than two hours at a time. Given the obvious challenges I was facing (including the whole having no soul problem), I found myself spending more time dedicated to the holy path - going so far as to author a controversial tome which has nevertheless inspired many (or so they tell me)...crazy people to hunt me down, that is. In such a brief summary as this, some facts must be left out - just know that throughout all I had been honing my skills in an ancient tradition of dervish mysticism. For some reason, my cultivation of holy contortions stimulated a vigorous flowering shortly after the birth of my children (oh yes, there was even a second half-demon girl). So now my time is split between my path as an "official" guru and selectively taming my wild children. I refuse to perform miracles for pay or turn on the high-pro glow for looky-loos, and refuse to temper the ferocity of my demonlings by sending them to be apprenticed under foreign masters - and that about sums up my attitude on those matters. Fortunately, the demon woman I married was in fact a princess of her realm. This was a surprise to me, although it shouldn't have been (her unearthly beauty, cunning, and fiery temper would have proved this to me incontrovertibly, had I possessed the requisite demonological lore) - and so matters of providence are resolved. (A good thing, for spiritual seekers tend not to be successful amassers of material wealth. Great wealth is almost a sure sign of charlatanry in a mixmaster of the electric boogaloo, which should give one pause when considering the opulence of the rather ubiquitous "fortresses of God" scattered about.) Even more fortunately, my demon princess is possessed of an astonishingly sharp and cunning mind. And her cunning is more than a match for my own shabby insights and oft-neglected wizard training. That is, we like playing board games together. A lot. (With the right combination of craft and fortune, I hope to win my soul back - here's hoping it hasn't already become a midnight snack.
