I got into the hobby in 2 phases in my life. As a child, I was exposed to the 'old school' 'traditions' of Life, Monopoly, Euchre, backgammon, and Sorry. However, some extended family get-togethers, had some relatives always searching for something new or different out there, before the Catan era. Every so often they'd come across something that was not available at the big box stores. This was in the 80's/90s. They discovered and shared a few things like Eurorails, the 3M bookshelf series, etc. If it wasn't for them, I might not be in the hobby today. I had some time to kill for a few hours one day, and visited a game store in 2007, looking for the equivalent of the old 3M series games, like Acquire. And, to my amazement, a whole new world had opened up before me. There was not only Catan and Fantasy Flight items to be seen, but tons of other 'euro' style games. My life has been changed forever since that day. I'm a big fan of just about anything in the hobby, but with a focus on medium to heavy weight 'euros'. I'll still happily play a war game, a card game, thrash game... anything with decision and outcomes for those choices that are interestingly integrated, floats my boat! When not playing, I find time to listen to a handful of gaming podcasts...a little of this, a little of that, to tide me over. I can't wait for the day to live a bit more urban, to open up some more playtime possibilities. This hobby has helped me find things that I love and people that are awesome.
