This is only for new films I've watched. I've seen a ton more movies but they got lost in IMDB. First and foremost I consider film as an art. That's why I never: - Care about technical aspects like voice or video quality, camera work, sound editing, special effects, CGI, etc. You wouldnt say that Picasso or Matisse were bad painters because they used cheap colours, low quality canvases or 1 dollar brushes. - Criticize a movie for its length. Imagine saying that The Brothers Karamazov is an OK book, but that it has "too many pages". Silly Dostoievsky, he could have cut entire chapters and he would have made a better book! - Complain about "lack of plot" or "plot holes" or whatever. If you think that the plot is the most important part of a movie you should be reading detective novels, not watching art films. Plot is the shallowest and least important component of a movie. For the best films I've ever watched you could read their entire plots in wikipedia, they are only a few paragraphs long, and they wouldn't tell you absolutely nothing about the experience you are gonna get. Things I do look for: - Honesty and genuineness. Does the director try to tell the truth as they sees it, or they embelish it, hide it, dont dig into it? They evade or confront uncomfortable moments? - Humanism. Does the director show a humanist, kind, comprehensive worldview or they are from the cynical, snarky school of Haneke, Todd Solonz et al? - Originality. This one should be obvious. Does the film offer a new view of reality, new experiences, new ways of seeing the world? Or is the same shit we've seen a thousand times. - Content over style. Is the filmmaker more interested in the style or in the substance? Does he try hard to be "cool", "hip", "flashy"? - Is there something at stake? This one is the hardest to explain, but I would say: most hollywood films and even indie films, take place in a galaxy far far away. We dont have nothing in common with the protagonist and the situations are so strange and far fetched that we feel safe because we know nothing like that could ever affect us. Nothing feels at stake, you are just being entertained. The best films shake our reality, ideas and worldview. They move us. They dont feel cold and distant, but close and personal. Also most filmmakers dont really take the risk to make a truly personal film. They play it safe because they dont want to fail, or because they just want to entertain or make some point about something. PS: all of this doesn't mean I don't like genre films. I'm a sucker for horror, noir and comedies as much as anyone else. Its just that I would only rate 4 stars the very best genre films, not 5 or 4,5.
