I have been playing modern boardgames intermittently since the early 2010s. Have become much more involved in the hobby over the last few years, which corresponds to a much more active presence on BGG (sometimes a little too active). A little about me (he/him/his pronouns) and my gaming preferences: :bd6-1: Games with strong themes are always going to be my favorite. I love sci-fi and horror games, though I tend to prefer "creeping dread" over "zombie apocalypse" when it comes to the latter. I also love me some solo games. :bd6-2: I strongly believe that diversity, representation, and inclusiveness matters in this hobby, whether it be in design, publication, or the playing community. :bd6-3: I make an effort (though not always a perfect effort) to avoid backing/buying games that lack diversity, include needlessly hypersexualized female characters, or perpetuate racist, Orientalist, or colonialist stereotypes. I'm not trying to be holier-than-thou, but I believe that popular culture - including board games - is a reflection of perceived cultural norms, and we can elevate those norms by elevating representation in the art itself. If you would like to have a respectful conversation about this, it would be my honor to do so; please GM me or hit me up in the forums. If you would like to rant about how I'm oversensitive, part of the "woke mob," and trying to impose a minority view on a majority of the community, I'm happy to have that conversation as well; I just need to [thing=4815]finish playing this game first[/thing], so be patient, and I'll be right with you. :bd6-4: I rate games after very few plays, but I make it a point to update my ratings regularly. I play solo quite a bit, so the caliber of a game's solo mode will factor heavily into my ratings. I also try to hew closely to BGG's ranking scale, except for expansions. For expansions, I use the following: :star::star::star::star::star::star::star::star::star::star: - [b][u]Transformative[/u][/b]. Truly realizes the base game's untapped potential. Would never play the base game without this expansion, and would never give the base game as a gift without including this expansion. :star::star::star::star::star::star::star::star::star: - [b][u]Superb[/u][/b]. Enhances and improves the base game significantly, in all aspects of the game. Would never play the base without this expansion. :star::star::star::star::star::star::star::star: - [u][b]Excellent[/b][/u]. Complements the base game exceptionally well, adding depth as well as polish. Might play the base game without this expansion, but only for nostalgia's sake, due to time constraints, or for teaching purposes. :star::star::star::star::star::star::star: - [u][b]Good[/b][/u]. A nice addition to the base game, reasonably enhancing theme, variety, or mechanics. Would prefer to include this expansion when playing the base game. :star::star::star::star::star::star: - [u][b]Above average[/b][/u]. Smooths out some of the edges of the base game. Makes the base game slightly better, but the base game plays just fine without it. (This is also the rating I give to good promos.) :star::star::star::star::star: - [u][b]Mediocre[/b][/u]. Changes to the base game are superficial, and more quantity than quality. Would not object to playing the base game with this expansion, but would not go to any great lengths to integrate the two. :star::star::star::star: - [u][b]Below average[/b][/u]. "Additions" to the game are really "subtractions." Makes the base game slightly worse, thematically or mechanically. Would prefer to play without this expansion. (This is also the rating I give to bad promos.) :star::star::star: - [u][b]Poor[/b][/u]. Badly designed, thematically and mechanically. Makes the base game significantly less enjoyable. Would not play the base game with this expansion. :star::star: - [u][b]Terrible[/b][/u]. Poorly designed and implemented, and barely integrates with the base game. Clearly a money-grab on the publisher's part. Makes the base game completely unenjoyable. Would not play the base game with this expansion included, without exception. :star: - [u][b]Awful[/b][/u]. Breaks the base game, either by destroying the theme or wrecking the mechanics, or both. Gives the impression that it was not playtested. A failure of design, and a waste of time and money. [u][b]For Gift Exchanges/the PiFF Community:[/u][/b] Thank you for thinking of me! I regularly participate in monthly Math Trades, which means my collection regularly changes around the 20th of each month. If you're thinking about buying a gift around that time, [u]please reach out to me so that I can confirm my wishlist/owned list is up to date.[/u] I'd hate to inadvertently duplicate your effort with a trade! Once trades are settled, my wishlist status is usually up-to-date. For 1PG gift exchanges, I set all of the gifts on my list to a "1" and mark them as "Valid for Secret One." Otherwise, I often default to a "4" when adding new items, and I'm still happy to have those as offers. [u][b]Random Gaming Things I Like (updating):[/u][/b] 1) Well-written flavor text. 2) Big, beautiful boards. 3) Kickstarters with no more than three pledge levels. 4) Publishers that release diagrams of how components fit into their fancy inserts. [u][b]Random Gaming Things I Dislike (updating):[/u][/b] 1) Games based on movies and TV shows (even when I like the movie or TV show). 2) The phrase (but not the act of) "engine building." 3) Game gatekeeping and snobbery, especially as regards the so-called "cult of the new." 4) Publishers that DON'T release diagrams of how components fit into their fancy inserts.
